5 Critical Optimisations for SEO Benefit

Offering award-winning SEO services in Melbourne, Newpath web has over ten years of experience delivering consistently excellent optimisations for businesses looking to rank well in Google. The SEO industry has changed dramatically over the past ten years, and so too have our tactics, both on- and off-site.

Looking at on-page adjustments, there are at least five different elements that simply must be optimised for your campaign to be successful. Let me tell you; this isn’t a comprehensive list, and probably covers 5% of what you can do for effective SEO. However, work on these, and you’ll see a small bump in your organic search rankings.

Title Tags

Optimising title tags is one of the most fundamental elements of on-page optimisation. The title tag is applied to every single page on your website, and Google uses this detail when ranking sites, but also when showing your result in their search. The blue clickable link in organic search? That’s the title tag.

Including a targeted keyword in the title tag is a must; however, that doesn’t mean you can ignore readability. Ensure that the title is still appropriately describing the page, and be sure to include your brand name, keeping everything under 60 characters to avoid cutoffs. Title tags should be unique and consistent throughout the website; do that, and you’ve successfully optimised something.

Meta Descriptions
You know on a search result, you have the blue clickable link (title tag), the little green URL underneath and then the paragraph of copy? That’s the meta description. While Google doesn’t use this as a ranking factor (debatable but let’s just accept it), it’s important to develop a meta description for this all the same, as the alternative is simply the first 160 characters from the copy on the page.

Including keywords is appropriate, but more importantly, you must succinctly describe the site and create an engaging and compelling reason for users to click on the link. Much like title tags, keep each of them unique, and under 160 characters to avoid missing out on key messaging.

Headers

When you set out to fill each page with content, you should really be included headers. Essentially acting as titles for each paragraph or section of writing, title tags are read by Google’s spiders and can influence search engine rankings. As a result, be sure to include keywords through these, especially in H1 and H2 tags.

Implementing headers correctly is vitally important, ensuring you only have one H1 tag, and having mainly H2 throughout the text. Think of headers as categorisations, with the H1 being the title of the content, H2’s being topic concepts, H3’s being individual sections within each concept and so on.

Body Paragraphs

The content on your site is fundamentally important to your SEO optimisation. Having appropriate keywords spread throughout every single page is critical, and having enough of them can greatly assist with ranking well. Remember, Google only want to show relevant information, so include keywords to make the pages relevant.

Ideally, we’re looking for 2-3 mentions of the keyword throughout the topic, along with more than 300 words per landing page. Work to reword and rephrase particular sections to more closely resemble keywords if you can’t include them directly.

Image Titles

Finally, if you’re looking to optimise your website, one fundamental element is to optimise image titles. Your website must include images, be they header images, in-line pictures or even simple icons. Regardless, you should optimise both image titles and alt-tags.

Image titles are important to label as descriptively as possible. Don’t make them too long, but be sure to tell Google what the image is, as it assists with their machine learning and can bring your website higher in search results. Alt-tags are directly related to ranking well and are meant to be for alternative descriptions, but it’s now really important to include your keywords in here as much as possible.
